Berkana Rehabilitation Institute

Category : Participating Charities

Berkana’s Story

Berkana is the vision of local rehabilitation professionals and community members that recognize the importance of using evidence-based practice in physical rehabilitation and in treating individuals using a whole-body approach.

At Berkana we believe that all individuals should have access to high quality rehabilitation services. Therefore, Berkana will reach out to the communities it serves through fund-raising events to ensure that those without insurance or who are facing rehabilitation needs that are not covered fully by their insurance will have access to the services we provide.

Our Name and Logo

Berkana is a Celtic word meaning “the transformation of beings into their new form.” This name is especially fitting since our first objective at Berkana is to transform the life of each individual by helping them reach their highest potential.

The three birch leaves in our logo are also rooted in Celtic symbolism. The adaptability of the birch demonstrates remarkable sustainability in harsh conditions as well as the ability to adapt and thrive in new conditions. At Berkana, we believe that the human spirit is remarkable and demonstrates the same natural attributes as the birch tree. Our purpose at Berkana is to help individuals thrive and grow despite the new challenges they face.

The selection of three leaves, graphically rooted in the rehabilitation institute, is used to represent the clinical, research and educational components of Berkana. The grouping of the three leaves together also represents community. This concept of community was important in the design of the logo since Berkana is being built for the community by the community.

Sinfonietta of Riverdale

Category : Participating Charities

The Sinfonietta of Riverdale is a unique ensemble — large enough to perform chamber symphonies and small enough that each of its world-class musicians can be a featured soloist, with a repertoire that extends from the era of Bach to the present day.

The Sinfonietta will seek to enhance the artistic environment of Riverdale and the surrounding community by presenting great classical and modern music in our own neighborhood. We will also serve as an educational resource by presenting children’s concerts and by collaborating with local schools and youth organizations.

Stanislaus LIteracy Center

Category : Participating Charities

In 1987, a need for a more literate workforce at a local cannery, Tri-Valley Growers, caused the formation of a literacy program as part of the Volunteer Center in Stanislaus County. Using Vista members, the Volunteer Center developed a program consisting of trained volunteers tutoring individuals one-on-one using the Laubach Way to Reading curriculum. In 1995, the Volunteer Center went under the umbrella of United Way and the literacy program became its own organization, the Stanislaus Literacy Center. By that time, there were about 50 volunteer tutors working with students and a program in the jail to teach reading and math skills and help inmates pass the GED test. Karen Williams was hired in 1996 as the first executive director. Under her leadership, programs grew and expanded. In 1998, the first family literacy program and a drop-in learning center were added. In 2001, The Stanislaus Literacy Center partnered with the Stanislaus County Library bringing more funding and volunteers to the literacy program. It was decided to call the product of this partnership ReadingWorks. Since 1996, the program has grown from a $68,000 budget and two part-time employees to over $850,000 and 15 full-time and 40 part-time employees.
